Are you putting your infant to bed with a bottle?

Baby bottle tooth decay also known as early childhood caries can be prevented. At Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry we see many infant patients and preventative dentistry is very important in our role. What is baby bottle tooth decay and what can we do to prevent it?

Baby bottle tooth decay is decay usually found in those in the infant stage who are put to bed with a bottle. The bottle may contain milk, juice or even breast milk. When the infant falls asleep with the bottle in their mouth a pool of the liquid forms in the child’s mouth. This pool surrounds the teeth exposing the mouth to sugar for prolonged amounts of time.

We all know that prolonged exposure of sugar in the mouth increases the chances for decay. So, it is suggested to never put your infant to bed with a bottle filled with anything other than water. If your little one must have a bottle we always recommend to wipe the gums immediately after the bottle to help eliminate the risk for decay.

Here at Young and Polite  Children's Dentistry we strive for all of our patients to find their dental visits fun.  The best way to do this is with a great checkup.  Help your child be on track for great dental health when you eliminate the increased risk for early childhood caries.

For more help & advice for great dental health for your little one ask any of our skilled dental professional team members any and all questions at your next routine dental visit.

The importance of mouth guards

A mouth guard may not be the first thing that comes to mind to protect your child’s teeth.  Here at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry we believe strongly in protecting those teeth with a mouth guard.

Why a mouth guard?

A mouth guard adds extra protection for your child while participating in a variety of contact sports. From soccer, baseball to lacrosse and those sports in- between a mouth guard covers the teeth to help prevent serious injuries to the teeth.  Mouth guards should fit comfortably, not impair breathing, be durable & easy to clean.

Mouth guards can come in a variety of forms. One of our pediatric dentists at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry will recommend the best mouth guard for your child.  Depending on if your child has braces & what the mouth guard is intended for a professional recommendation will be made specifically for your child.

Without a mouth guard your child could sustain serious injuries to their teeth during a sporting activity. If your child has braces and endures an injury to the mouth the braces can cut the lips, tongues or the inside of the mouth.  In some cases, the injuries even involve sutures or stitches.  If the mouth receives an impact the chance of a tooth being knocked loose or out increases without the use of a mouth guard.

Many contact sports require players to wear mouth guards.  If your child is or will be participating in a contact sport, Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry recommends your child have a well fitted mouth guard.  Not sure if a mouth guard is necessary for your child, call our office and schedule a consult or be sure to ask one of our pediatric dentists about your concerns at your child’s next routine dental care appointment.

Because they're more than just "baby" teeth

Baby teeth don’t get the credit they deserve. You have probably heard or even said yourself “they’re just baby teeth.” Here at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry we understand how important “baby” teeth are.

Baby teeth with a more formal name of deciduous teeth serve several purposes.  These purposes include space maintenance. Baby teeth are space holders for the permanent teeth.  Typically, the baby tooth remains in your child’s mouth until the permanent tooth is ready to make its grand appearance.  The roots of baby teeth are short and dissolve making the baby tooth loose as the permanent tooth underneath it pushes up causing the baby tooth to fall out.

What happens if the baby tooth is lost too early?

This happens and we are aware of the proper steps to take here at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry.  Baby teeth can be accidentally knocked out or sometimes must be removed due to extreme tooth decay. It is important to understand the timeline of when baby teeth are typically lost and permanent teeth emerge. If there is a significant amount of time the baby tooth is lost and the permanent tooth will emerge one of our pediatric dentists at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry may suggest a space maintainer  be placed. Having the proper amount of space for the adult tooth to fully emerge is very important.

Along with baby teeth being space maintainers they also serve the function for chewing and aid in speech. Before considering a baby tooth as just a “baby tooth” consult with one of our pediatric dentists at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry. Baby teeth serve an important role in the lifelong oral health for your child.  We offer three locations to serve you and your family Waxhaw, Mint Hill and South Tryon.

At what age should my child see a dentist?

When is the right time to start taking my child to see the dentist? …….. The answer is simple! The earlier the better. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children start seeing the dentist as early as when their first teeth start to appear and typically by their 1st birthday. Beginning early visits to the dentist is a proactive approach that all parents can do to ensure a lifetime of optimal dental health.

Even if you haven’t started taking your child to regular dental checks, it’s never too late to take them. At Young & Polite Children’s Dentistry we are here to help! We welcome patients from young babies’ right through to teenager years.

What to expect at your first visit?

We want your child’s dental visits to be as much fun as possible. All our Doctors and staff are trained in pediatric care and are armed with helpful tips and techniques to help you keep your child’s oral health at it's best! We take our time and get to know you and your child, building a relationship with your family so you feel comfortable with us.

During your first visit we take the time to answer any questions you may have. We will discuss techniques to help you keep your child’s oral health good at home and show you ways to help brush and floss your child’s teeth. When your child is young we try to keep all dental visits short and fun for them. Building a positive environment so that your child will enjoy returning to visit with us.

Here at “Young & Polite” we promote prevention. We try and help teach our parents and their child “healthy habits” that in turn will prevent fewer cavities. We encourage long term healthy habits that will help keep our patient’s cavity free for as long and as best as possible. At your next visit be sure to ask one of our friendly staff about what healthy habits can help keep your child’s oral health great!

Most of all at Young and Polite Children's Dentistry, we take great pride in getting to know your family. We want the best for your children. When you visit with us at any of our 3 locations you can expect great customer care, knowledge and information as well as a fun family-friendly place for your child to visit. Being Part of a Great Town

We couldn’t be more proud than to call Waxhaw home to one of our pediatric dental office locations. We recently had the pleasure of attending the monthly Waxhaw Business Association meeting.

The Waxhaw Business Association was gracious enough to allow us to provide breakfast for the local business owners, and we felt privileged to be in attendance surrounded by so many individuals that are largely involved within the community for charitable and community awareness. At this time we had the opportunity to thank many of the local businesses who gave for our recent back pack and back to school supply drive.  It was through their support and donations we were able to send 50 students to school with a back pack and school supplies to kick off the beginning of the school year.

This meeting also allows those who attend to stay up-to-date with local events and community discussions.  So many business owners had opportunities to involve the community in family friendly events.  With our focus being on providing great dental care to the children of the community we feel it is important to know the views within the community along with all family geared events.

When a room full of entrepreneurs get together great ideas are sure to collide.  We look forward to more community involvement in the great town of Waxhaw.  Look for more things coming your way that are family focused and a great way to stay active and in touch with your home town. Thanks again to the Waxhaw Business Association for allowing us the opportunity to be a part of something small yet so big. Here at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry we see beyond our dental office walls and into the heart of each town that allows us the opportunity to provide dental care to their family & friends.

Our Defensive Line Against Sugary Drinks

It’s no big secret that too much sugar can cause tooth decay, and as more and more research is being compiled and studies completed that indicate this connection, what are we to do about it? The answer is simple. We have to teach ourselves and as proactive caretakers, have to teach our children .

“Healthier habits” to take with them through life, give them the best chance possible!

Here at Young & Polite located in Waxhaw, Mint Hill and our South Tryon location we encourage our patients  to try and limit sugary drink consumption and opt for the healthier choice instead, water!

So what happens when too much sugar meets saliva?

Every time you sip a soda, the sugar in the drink and the bacteria in your mouth mix. This combination forms acid and the acid attacks the teeth, eating away at the enamel (the strong, protective outer layer of the tooth).  This constant attack as we sip sodas, soft drinks, sports drinks or fruit juices, continuously bombards the teeth and over time breaks down the enamel so much that decay starts to occur.

Children and teenagers teeth are most in danger because their teeth are still forming and introducing sugar at this time of development makes the teeth much more vulnerable.
But you’re not alone in the fight against tooth decay, consumption of sugary drinks is falling and many schools are opting to reduce or remove sugar loaded drinks from the school cafeteria. Water is the best source for thirst and to keep hydrated.

Young & Polite Children's Dentistry are ready to be your defensive team against decay! Schedule  your child’s routine checkups and we’ll encourage healthier habits and teach your children all the techniques they need to tackle tooth decay! We offer 3 convenient locations for your loved ones. Call today to schedule!

Sealants for the Added Protection

Even the best tooth brusher leaves plaque behind sometimes.  Teeth contain deep groves, pits and hard to clean chewing surfaces. The doctors at Young and Polite Children's Dentistry recommend dental sealants for tooth protection from the common dental cavity.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are protective coverings applied directly to the chewing surface of a tooth. This simple and pain free service to help prevent decay is an easy and typically short appointment.  The biting surface is cleaned and rinsed well first. Second, a special cleaning agent is applied to the tooth. This agent stays on the tooth shortly and then is thoroughly rinsed off allowing the surface to become rough. Next an applicator or brush is used to apply the sealant material. The plastic material is then hardened by a special light. It’s as easy as that! Your child should avoid sticky or crunchy foods for several hours following the sealant application.

Your child will be examined and  will possibly be recommended sealants during their hygiene visit at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry. A great time for the application of sealants is when your child’s permanent molars fully erupt. Let’s face it brushing isn’t an easy and sometimes thorough task for our children. Sealants can help protect your child from cavities while they are still learning to properly and effectively brush and floss.

If your child is at an increased risk for decay sealants are a great option. Sealants are affordable and pain free prevention for costly and pain filled cavities. Save your child a toothache and once recommended by a dentist at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry you may consider sealants for preventive care.
If you have questions about sealants or if it is recommended for your child, please contact one of our professional team members at one of our locations in Mint Hill, Waxhaw or S.Tryon. Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry looks forward to making your family part of our dental family.

Your dental report card A+

It’s that time of year again. The kids are getting bored and the back to school ads are flooding the radio, television and internet.  It is also the time when caregivers sometimes remember all the doctors and dentist visits that may have been put off with the traveling and enjoyment of summer.  While we can’t wait for our patients to share their great report cards with us, we also encourage an A+ when it comes to their dental report card!

Did you know that tooth aches are a very common cause for school absences?  Tooth aches even ones that are small and infrequent make it difficult for even the most studious students to stay fully engaged.  Pay attention, as a care giver, to the signs of a possible tooth ache.  Is your child avoiding specific foods? Does your child complain of a toothache? Is your little one cranky and can’t tell you why? Have you noticed a small ulcer on the gums? All of these are common symptoms of a possible dental infection and can certainly cause a tooth ache. Toothaches are a major contributor to school absences and unsatisfactory performance in school.

If your child needs a dental checkup please feel free to contact Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry. If one of our pediatric trained dental professionals finds any area of dental hygiene improvement, we will gladly inform both the patient and caregiver. An A+ on your child’s dental report card is achievable, but will require encouragement and sometimes assistance from either the parent or caregiver.

As the start of a new school year begins in the days to come now is a great time to schedule a routine dental appointment for your child. We have 3 different locations in Mint Hill, South Tryon and Waxhaw for your convenience.  Our dental professionals at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry look forward to providing outstanding customer and dental services to your family and friends.  We hope your first day of school is just as special as you are!

The Stress Free Approach Towards Great Brushing Habits

What makes a great habit?  It has been said that it takes around 21 days to form a new habit.  So what does that mean for your child when trying to form brushing habits? Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry encourages routine brushing habits for all of our patients.

Brushing is best if done for 2 minutes.  Children and many adults have a hard time brushing for the complete two minutes.  If you have a timer from the kitchen dig it out of the junk drawer, a stop watch, or even a sand filled timer, it is time to put it to use.

Challenge yourself to brush for the full two minutes. Make it a competition to see who can brush for the recommended time, you or your child? You will be surprised at how quickly and inefficiently most of us brush.  Making an effort for your child to see the routines that are important for a healthy lifestyle are important from a young age.

Part of seeing you, as the caregiver have a routine is providing consistency.  Children love consistency. Do you have a set time your child brushes his/her teeth every night?  Set up a morning routine for your child and an evening routine.  Summer time is a great time to establish these routines.  Without the rush to be off to school, and the homework plus activities keeping us overwhelmed in the evening.  Take the summer weeks to make small changes at first to your routine and then provide consistency.  If your bedtime routine is snack, brush your teeth and one short book before bed then stick to the plan. Reward your child with positive words for doing a great job! One of the many things we use daily at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry is the use of positive words and encouragement!
For more information and all things dental for you and your little check us out on Facebook, and make sure to follow the blogs from Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry.  If you need help with ways to create brushing routines ask one of our staff members at your next visit at any of our locations in Waxhaw, Mint Hill or the S.Tryon area.

Summer reading

Summer time is the most exciting time of the year for school aged children & teachers (don’t worry we won’t tell.) With vacations, pool time, camps, and visiting family & friends we know how easy it can be to forget to stay up on your summer reading. Here at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry we value the importance of education and understand the need for continued reading.

Reading to your child is a great way to bond and develop strong reading skills. A great book provides educational entertainment and memories to last a lifetime.

What better way to prepare your child for his or her dental visit than with a great book on the topic. We have several recommendations. Take a look at several fun quick reads about the dentist. Grab a seat and prepare your child for a great first or next dental visit. Part of what makes the dentist so exciting and fun is the preparation for an easy visit.

Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry wants every child to have a great dental experience and a great school year. Tell us what book you love at your next visit at one of our convenient locations in S.Tryon, Mint Hill or the Waxhaw location. Don’t forget to ask one of our staff members what their favorite book is.

Summer Safety

Summer time just screams fun, but it shouldn’t scream unplanned trips to the dentist. While many outdoor activities take place during the warmer months and festivities for holidays we want all of our patients at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry to take care of their teeth.

Remember all of your safety rules around pools. Falls around the pool area are common ways that teeth and the facial area can become injured. Not only are pools a hot spot for injured teeth the very common bicycle has been known for some pretty nasty accidents as well.  Wear your helmet and obey all rules while riding your bike.

If you should receive an injury to the mouth that is not necessary for immediate medical assistance please call our office for further instructions and the next available appointment. Remember to place ice on and off of the injured area to help reduce swelling. A great way to help protect those teeth is a mouth guard. Mouth guards offer extra protection especially from sports injuries to the mouth.

If an injury does arise we offer our professional pediatric dental services at three locations including Mint Hill, Waxhaw, and S. Tryon. One of our team members will be happy to assist you. Don’t forget to have fun this summer and stay safe.

We are happy to announce a fun event offered at our Waxhaw location on June, 13th. Kick off summer right with free ice cream from 12-2pm. Hurry we might be all scooped out after the first 150 participants.

Those teeth were made to be flossed...

Those teeth were made to be flossed…

Many of us could improve on the technique and frequency that we floss. We are the role models for our children even when it comes to the habits of daily flossing and brushing.  It is important to us, your dental provider here at Young & Polite Children’s Dentistry to encourage proper flossing and brushing.

Flossers are a great way to get those kiddos to floss those teeth. Many of the flossers now are made to look like dinosaurs, sea animals, princesses and etc. Flossing ideally should be done once a day. It has been a long discussion for quite some time now as when to floss.  Should we floss before or after we brush?  Simply put it is important to just get into the habit of flossing. Some argue to floss before brushing.  The thought is to remove debris between the teeth and then brush it away.

Why is it important to floss?  Tooth brush bristles cannot get in-between the touching teeth.  If food and debris stay lodged in-between teeth for an extended amount of time decay is likely to occur.  Tooth decay is more commonly referred to as a cavity.

So why should my children or younger loved ones floss?  Once teeth, most commonly the back baby teeth are touching flossing should become a daily habit. My child’s teeth have spacing and do not touch, so why should they floss? Just because the teeth do not touch does not mean that debris cannot become lodged in-between the teeth. Flossing also helps to remove plaque that sits in-between teeth as well. Importantly enough daily flossing at a young age encourages flossing habits for a life time.

Creating a habit at a young age can help create healthy habits. Young & Polite Children’s Dentistry encourages all of our patients to have great brushing and flossing habits each day.  Are you looking for a great dental family for your little ones? Young & Polite Children’s Dentistry is conveniently  located in Waxhaw, S.Tryon & Mint Hill. We look forward to helping establish great flossing habits for your family and friends. You are never too young or too old to start flossing!

The 101 when it comes to speaking about the dentist with your child

The dentist can make many people anxious regardless of their age.  As a parent we strive to relieve the fears and pressures our children may have. Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry wants every child to have a great dental visit each time.

Sometimes we need a little coaching on the correct words and the incorrect words when gearing up our little ones for a dental visit.  Let’s talk a little bit about what not to say. Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry encourages parents to avoid the use of  the dentist office as punishment.  For instance, telling your child that if they eat that extra sweet treat the dentist will have to give them a shot or pull their teeth can be very discouraging.  The dentist is then thought to be mean and scary.  All of the staff at our Waxhaw, Mint Hill or South Tryon location greet your children with smiles and strive to make the dental office a fun place to be. We as dental professionals never use the words shot, hurt, painful, needle or things with a negative ring to them.

Now let’s take a look at how to use encouraging words and some examples of those encouraging words. You will often hear our professional staff at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry refer to the injection as a little pinch.  You may also hear fun words like the whistle, instead of the drill.  How much fun would it be to have your teeth nice and shiny like a Princess or strong like a Superhero? Always try to think about the things your children love and look up to.  These things can be used as encouragement for excellent lifelong dental health.

The dentist office can be such a fun and exciting place for our youngsters. Our staff at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry strive for a great dental experience at each visit.  We encourage you as parents and caregivers to get your children excited about the dental office by using fun words about the dentist. If you are in need of an appointment at our fun and encouraging pediatric dental office please give us a call today 980-245-3451. We have locations in Waxhaw, Mint Hill and South Tryon.

Spring Break doesn’t mean taking a break from your child’s oral hygiene routine

Spring break is here and everyone is so excited including everyone at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry. While this is a time for many to vacation, relax and enjoy the great weather in Charlotte, NC it is also a time to keep up with your child’s oral hygiene routine.

Hopefully your little one is brushing twice a day. If not, now is the perfect time to start! Brushing morning and night helps reduce the risk of cavities as a result of proper plaque removal.  Plaque is pretty nasty.  It contains debris from food particles, bacteria, and other things. While we may be so busy during our vacation time don’t become too busy to forget to remind your child to continue those super important brushing habits. It happens from time to time, we forget to remind them.  If you are assisting your child in brushing if they are under the age of 8, please continue this habit that establishes oral hygiene routines for the rest of your child’s life.

Did you know that plaque left on the teeth for more than 48hrs speeds up the process of tooth decay also known as cavities? Help your little one with brushing during those vacation days. If you unpack the suitcase and notice the toothbrush didn’t get packed, stop by your local store and purchase a new one. Toothbrushes are fairly inexpensive and we always provide your child with the proper size toothbrush at the completion of their oral hygiene visit at any one of our three locations here at Young and Polite Children’s Dentistry.

If your child is in need of an oral hygiene visit commonly referred to as a dental cleaning, please call one of our locations at 980-245-3451, and one of our professional team members will gladly assist you.  We are conveniently located in Waxhaw, Mint Hill & S.Tryon. Remember to brush, brush, brush, and enjoy your spring break.
